Show me once

There is a particular way someone in the family checks whether a plant needs water. A finger in the soil. A glance at the leaves. A small turn of the pot towards the light.

Ask them how they know, and the answer may be: come here, I will show you.

We often ask older people whether they have eaten, taken their medicines, or slept well. Those questions matter. But there is another kind of conversation in asking them to teach us something.

For a while, they get to explain. We get to be the one who does not know. And a little piece of what they have learned has somewhere to go.

What is one everyday skill you would like someone older in your family to show you?
