The Sunday phone call
Somewhere in most families there is a call that happens on the same day, at roughly the same hour.
Nobody scheduled it. It settled there years ago and stayed.
The news in it is rarely news. The weather. Somebody's knee. A neighbour's son who has moved abroad. Ten minutes, sometimes eight. Often the same ten minutes as last week.
It looks like nothing. It is actually the whole arrangement — the standing proof that someone is still there on the other end, at the usual hour, on the usual day.
Most families only notice the shape of it on the day the hour comes and the phone stays quiet.
Which day of the week belongs to a call in your family, and who usually picks up first?
