How do you start this with a parent who will not have it?
Mine changes the subject with a joke every time. I am not asking about paperwork — I am asking how people actually open this.

Do not open with the papers. Ask him to tell you about his father — where he was buried or burned, who arranged it, what went wrong. People will talk about their parents long before they will talk about themselves.

And do not do it at a family gathering. One person, one room, no audience. The joke is usually for the room rather than for you.
